The Extraordinary Fall Anime Season of 2021

First of all, Sorry I'm late guys.
It's already past midway into the season, and Oh What a Season Fall has been for the community.
We all expected this season to be great with the astounding number of electrifying works returning and being freshly adapted this season, but we didn't expect this season to slap this hard did we?.
It's a season infused with so much action, drama, thrills and overall epicness that could rival even the greatest of anime seasons.
It's a perfect way to reignite the anime fandom's hype muscles after the refreshing and relatively slow Summer season.
This season's catalogue is impressively compact, delivering a great number of hits in all angles. Given just how wildly entertaining and mind-blowing the stack this season is, I couldn't help but see it as 'Extraordinary'.
This is no doubt the most entertaining season this year, and instant classics and hype machines exist both among the sequels and new shows of this great season.
I'm here to personally recommend and review both the plausible sequels and new shows this season, highlighting all the great stuff you might be missing out on in Fall 2021.
Starting with the Sequels, although this season didn't have up to 13+ relevant returning shows like Winter, it surely has a stack of epic sequels and it's pretty much ranks 2nd among Seasons this year with the most sequels.
We got 9 relevant sequels airing this season, and it's safe to say every single one of them has been just amazing.
It's most impressive how some new hits from earlier seasons I'll mention in a bit returned with early 2nd seasons airing this Fall making a double impact in one year.
Let's discuss the Sequels in a bit shall we
Starting with the most explosive to the least.
Talking about the most explosive and hypable sequel airing this season, what more could I be referring to than the smash hit of 2019, whose waves of success in all angles pretty much made it one of the most influential modern animes ever. I'm talking of course about Demon Slayer, which returned with its 2nd season this year, the first few episodes being a serialized release of the masterpiece movie, Mugen Train, before diving into the anticipated Entertainment District arc .
Ufotable of course never misses, so this season has been every bit as gloriously adapted and amazing as the first.
The 2nd most explosive sequel this season, everyone's pick for Isekai anime of the year and my Anime of the Season of Winter, Mushoku Tensei Jobless Reincarnation . The 2nd season started early in October, and since then it's been really amazing. Centering on Dead End's journey through the world and their encounters with different races, this season shows every bit the high quality storytelling, foreshadowing and aesthetic fulfillment we love from it, making for a fantastic and emotional adventure.
World Trigger also making a double impact this year with its 3rd season airing this season, even after the 2nd season in Winter. This season has been so amazing so far, I recently had to blog about it, also focusing on the B Rank wars, it's been an action packed joyride with its technical battles and introduction of more amazing characters and teams. It's an anime that's underhyped and underappreciated, but those sleeping on this show are missing out on a whole lot of awesomeness.
86 , one of the best animes of Spring, also returned with its 2nd season, making a double impact, and it's been amazing so far, although not as amazing as the first to be honest, but given how climactic its story can get, underrating this sequel isn't an option.
Don't Miss out on Baki Season 3 too, it's been the ridiculously action-centric thriller we appreciate it for, as Baki finally prepares for a final showdown against his father, Hanma Yujiro.
The wholesome Isekai, Restaurant in Another World also airs this season with a studio change to OLM, who seem to be doing a fantastic job with its adaptation.
Tawawa on Monday Season 2 is also right there for the degenerates this season, this season has been even more lewd and sexually appealing than the first with its overly busty female characters.
Daily Life of an Immortal King Season 2 dropped a while ago, and it's looking to be another action packed season of one of the best Chinese animes in modern times.
My Most Anticipated Sequel of the season, JoJo's Bizarre Adventures Part 6: Stone Ocean ; it's still yet to come, but the hearts of JoJo fans are set ablaze when we remember that on December 1st, all episodes will be released at once on Netflix, and we'll finally get our dosage of JoJo's craziness and over-the-top battles with female leads this time.
Let's get on to the main course shall we.
The New Shows of Fall 2021
This Season has been positively and insanely showered with amazing new shows of an astounding range of genres and settings.
We got a lot of action and thrills this season in our new releases, laced with romance and dramatic thrills, you're guaranteed to have great experience with this season's new shows.
I'm here for you once again to guide you through the 20 New Shows I feel you should all check out in a ranking of my top shows this season.
I'll be making the list a bit different this time. Given that this season is so extraordinary with so many hits, and it's already this late into it, Instead of fixating on narrating the plot structure of each entry, I'd rather give just a brief description of it and dive straight into the reviews.
I think at this point in the season it'd be better to let you all know more about how each of these shows made me feel than just what they're about. And besides, anyone could a synopsis of a show anywhere, but a genuine review feels more authentic.
Let's get on with the list, counting down my...
TOP 20 BEST NEW ANIMES OF FALL 2021

20) SELECTION PROJECT
(Music, Drama)

It seems seasonal music animes are becoming more saturated nowadays in the community, and I would've given this the title of music anime of the season, but it was massively overshadowed by one of the top entries on this list.
It's a story of passion and music, where girls are selected based on their musical talents from around the world to sing and compete in an Idol show titled The Selection Project.
The music quality is really good, and even if I did wish it would've avoided CGI performances completely, the character designs and animation in also plausible.

19) THE VAMPIRE DIES IN NO TIME
(Comedy, Supernatural)

Here's an anime that's definitely assured to lighten up your mood.
It's an extremely wacky and hilarious show about a famed vampire hunter Ronaldo and his adventures with a Vampire believed to be legendary but in reality is nothing but a blatant weakling who literally dies and turns to sand for even the slightest threats to his life.
Given this narration you can already tell this is gonna be a fun-filled adventure story. Each episode is really fun and enjoyable, and it's one fans of light-hearted comedy will definitely find interesting.

18) GAMBARE DOUKI CHAN
(Romance, Ecchi)

By the way weebs, how's your No Nut November going?, good? Well it you want it to stay that way you better avoid this sexy new romance show.
Gambare Douki Chan is centered on Douki, a woman who fell in love with her work Senpai, but stumbles across various obstacles in forms of either other female co-workers/possible love interests for him or just unfortunate events that foil her romantic plans.
It has a lot of hentai-energy without actual dirty scenes and given how gorgeous the character designs of the female characters are, it makes sense for it to be seen as one (overlooking the no-eyed dark-haired male love interest), it's just a fun show to look out for every week. And given the fact that each episode is literally just 5 minutes long, it's really easy to catch up on.

17) BUILD DIVIDE: CODE BLACK
(Action, Sci-fi)

Any fans of Bakugan and Digimon in the house? Well I've got something for you.
It's another high octane card fight gaming show with impressive powers and visual displays.
It's centered on Kurabe Teruto, who woke up in the dystopian city of Neo-Tokyo after losing his memories. He gets introduced to the truth and the very concept that runs the world being a card game named 'Build Divide'.
After a battle with his female companion, his ambitions are reignited, and he plunges forward one battle at a time in order to achieve his goal of defeating the King.
It's a show fans of the card game concept are bound to enjoy. It's aesthetically pleasing, energizing with its impressive visuals and to add to that, the opening track is just a banger!.

16) KYOUKAI SENKI
(Mecha, Action)

Speaking of aesthetically pleasing shows this season, Kyoukai Senki is one Mecha fans would certainly not want to miss this season.
It's refreshing to see Sunrise studio finally going back to their roots after completing a fantastic run with Gintama.
The Sunrise production this anime tends towards in a seemingly unsettling manner is Code Geass. It has pretty much almost the same setting with a terrorized Japan in a world were most battles are fought using sophisticated robotic vehicles and a main character who steps up to combat the oppressors being backed by the resistance.
But the robots in this anime are called AMAIM and the main character may not be an intellectual or have any special Supernatural abilities (yet) but he's passionate and drives a very special AMAIM to shape a future for Japan.

15) STAR WARS :VISIONS
(Action, Sci-fi)

Very early this season we were blessed with Disney's first anime. It's an anime anthology series set in the Star Wars Universe that tells short but compact stories centered on non-canon characters.
Although the characters don't exist in the main Star Wars timeline, this show pulls you into and get you captivated by their stories as it makes creative use of all the elements and concepts we love from Star Wars and integrates them with Japanese storytelling techniques.
Being a Disney production it won't come as any surprise, but the visuals were top tier, Studio Trigger being at the helm of this high budget anime series along with a few others. I really loved it particularly the episodes titled 'The Village Bride' and 'The Elder' were my favourites.

14) BANISHED FROM THE HERO'S PARTY, I DECIDED TO LIVE A QUIET LIFE IN THE COUNTRYSIDE
(Romance, Fantasy)

Fantasy series nowadays, especially the slow-life kind seem to have formed a habit of having long descriptive titles.
Anyways, I won't have to say much about it since the title already very well describes the hero in question; Red and his situation.
He lives by the countryside with his newfound companion/roommate/newfound lover, Rit who's known and loved by the people for her skills and deeds.
It's a very refreshing show to catch up on, after a few episodes the bond between Red and Rit got deeper and the romantic direction makes it a comforting watch to anyone looking to unwind.

13) PLATINUM END
(Action, Supernatural)

Death Note creator's latest work in the anime industry has been really something throughout its run so far this season.
It's centered on Mirai, a young troubled guy who in an attempt to commit suicide gets chosen as a 'god candidate' among 12 others, to be part of a Divine competition to decide who'll become the next God and rule the world.
Being equipped with Red arrows that could manipulate people's hearts and White arrows that could kill instantly, with special ranked angel- Nasse at his corner, Mirai who just wants to be happy gets pulled into this crazy battle royale where God candidates challenge eachother physically and mentally in order to determine the one who stands on top in the end.
This show although not being as intense, brutal, unforgiving and intuitively written as Death Note, still manages to fulfill those aesthetics well while capturing man's greed when given absolute power.
It couldn't crack the top 10 basically because it fell off from the immensely thematic direction I loved about it after a few episodes.

12) SAKUGAN
(Comedy, Adventure)

Here's a show that took me by surprise.
If you're looking for a fun adventure this season, it doesn't get better than Sakugan.
It's a show that's bound to make you smile in each passing episode with its sparky character types, dynamics and overall craziness.
A world where giant monsters exist, with humanity being forced to live underground and pilot giant robotic vehicles to combat these 'Kaijus' , a cocky adventurer named Gugumber and his genius daughter Memenpu, explore this chaotic world facing every obstacle head on.
It has a setting that makes it seem a lot like Gurren Laggan with a splash of Made in Abyss, but it bears its own unique charms.
Gugumber and Memenpu are both amazing characters based on traits, and their bitter-sweet dynamic/relationship makes this anime a really relieving and wildly entertaining show.

11) MY SENPAI IS ANNOYING
(Romance, Comedy)

Office romance seems to be rearing its head into the industry a lot these days, but of all we've gotten this year, none seems to be as good as My Senpai is Annoying.
Futaba, an adult office-worker who's way too little to be considered an adult anyway, develops feelings for her Senpai at work who mostly teased her.
The romance grows and with each passing episode, she spends time with him while trying to come to terms with her feelings and find out if it goes both ways.
One thing I love about this show is how specialized it is as an adult romance while being extremely fun and wholesome. The romance in this show not only touches the main couple, other co-workers as well get gratifyingly developed as characters and properly shipped with romantic interests in the show which just further enhances the sweet romantic experience.

10) THE FARAWAY PALADIN
(Fantasy, Adventure)

Halfway into the list, and we've got our first Isekai title of the season.
Saihate no Paladin is an Isekai centered on Will, who lived an unfulfilling life in the real world and post-death gets reincarnated as a child put in the care of 3 Undead former adventurers, Blood, Mary and Gus.
While this may seem like a very generic plot setting, this show handles it's storytelling in a far more sophisticated way than most of the similar works of its kind.
This story subverts the bland instantly action packed Isekai formula, spending ample time and focus on Will in his juvenile ages, getting trained, learning more about the world and getting properly raised by his irregular parents.
This acts as excellent foreshadowing to everything that's to come when the story reaches its fruition, clearing all inadequacies as to how Will is as pure or proficiently skilled as he is.
With how much great writing and storytelling this has, I would've jumped to call this Isekai of the season, but it's very subpar in terms of experience, especially when compared with the Top Isekai on this list.

9) TAISHO MAIDEN FAIRYTALE
(Romance, Drama)

Talking about wholesome shows this season, there literally is none as wholesome, comforting and heartwarming as this anime.
Taisho Otome Fairytale focuses on Tamahiko Shima, young Duke who has been harshly treated by his father for as long he can remember. In his youthful age, due to his illness, he got exiled, written off as 'dead' in his home town and sent to live far away with a young maiden , Yuzu, who was purchased to be his wife.
What makes this show so wholesome is pretty much just everything about it, from watching the two live quiet lives together, to watching them fall in love with eachother to just enjoying them express different emotions and comfort eachother.
This anime in its essence is a love story and it doesn't try to be anything else. The thematic moments when Tamahiko remembers his sad past and breaks down being complemented by the romantic scenes that come after, honestly make this one of the most beautiful love stories this whole year.

8) IRINA THE VAMPIRE COSMONAUT
(Drama, Romance)

With all the romance hits this season, I'm sure many are bound not to even notice this show, and I won't blame them because honestly even I almost overlooked this show.
One could call it a love story between a man and a vampire, one could also call it a dream chasing adventure between two space lovers, and from both angles it still strikes as a beautiful show.
Lev, a soldier at Laika44, who dreams of going to space is put in charge of Irina, a vampire subject that exists solely to be the lab rat of the agency as they make an attempt to finally launch man into space.
The themes in this anime shouldn't be overlooked, it depicts racism directly in the horrible way the humans treat Irina, of course with the exception of Lev. This treatment is based on the mythology of vampires are blood sucking monsters, but this belief didn't seem to be the case in reality. Lev being put in charge of Irina or 'subject N44', he gets a proper orientation as to how vampires actually are and sees her charming aspects, and they grew closer together while lighting a path towards their shared dream to reach the Moon one day.

7) MIERUKO-CHAN
(Horror, Comedy)

A title that certainly needs no introduction to the anime community given its massive pre-existing fanbase.
Horror-comedies have always been a spicy genre combination for me, especially given the fact that it's a juxtaposition of two genres with opposing elements.
But works like Mieruko-chan show just how amazing such such a combo could be if properly adapted.
A highschool girl named Miko notices she now has the ability to see actual spiritual monsters or ghosts, and summoning all her nerves of steal, Miko decides the best way to get through life with such baggage is to pretend they don't even exist, no matter how horrifying her encounters with them get.
It's amazing just how Miko's encounters with these spirits end up being either hilarious or thrilling and sometimes even a combination of both, as she struggles to endure these scary beings literally lurking at every corner.
In terms of the experience of each episode, it's pretty much one of the best this season and honestly if I were to ignore the unnecessary lewd camera angles, it's one of the best this season.

6) THE HEIKE STORY
(Historical, Drama)

Most of you are probably just hearing about this show from this and honestly it's not surprising giving the fact that it's setting is one that doesn't summon hype from the anime fandom at all.
It's honestly one of those masterful works that you're gonna have to dig deeper in order to notice , and follow with an open mind in order to see it's beauty.
Heike Monogatari adds to the list of historical anime shows that actually tells a story partaking to Japanese History, particularly the Heike, a nation which once bloomed in harmony and wealth, facing several challenges and struggles to survive as a nation. The story is being told through the eyes of a young girl named Biwa, who's father was killed at the hands of Heike soldiers and she now bore the ability to peak into the future as she was taken in by the royal family.
In terms of Storytelling, pacing and scenery, this anime is gloriously adapted, and the emotional bits of the story are really impactful. The animation and art feels like a Japanese painting come to life, which complements it's smooth storytelling to give a proper feel of the ancient Japanese setting.
I'd be the first to admit that it's not for everyone, but give this show a shot!.

5) WORLD'S FINEST ASSASSIN GETS REINCARNATED IN A FANTASY WORLD AS AN ARISTOCRAT
(Action, Fantasy)

Talk about my biggest surprise of the season huh.
Who would've expected an Isekai created by Rui Tsukiyo, proud creator of the controversy magnet of Winter; Redo of Healer to be this good.
It didn't look like anything worth giving attention this season, but World's Finest Assassin has certainly proved itself to be one of the most entertaining shows this season.
It's centered on a guy known in the world as the greatest assassin, who got betrayed/murdered by his agency, and gets hired by a Goddess in need of his skills to get reborn into a fantasy world in order to kill the hero with the unique set of skills he was given.
The first thing I loved about this anime was how, for once, we got a main character who actually had an action packed thrilling life in the real world as much as he had in the fantasy world. Given the fact that he was the greatest assassin, his exceptional talents in the fantasy world all but made sense, and they were practically the reason for his reincarnation in the first place. The whole thing just seems well directed, and for a seemingly action-centric plot, it starts out slowly, first watching Lugh grow, devolop in character, get trained and meet his future companions.
It's a really fun and enjoyable show, brutal when it needs to be, and it's a gripping fact that Redo of Healer's Creator could make something this good.

4) BLUE PERIOD
(Slice of Life, Shounen)

If you're in the mood for some inspiration this season, I think the perfect show for you should be Blue Period.
Pretty-boy highschooler, Yaguchi discovers his newfound interest in art and gets the realization that this venture might be the missing piece that could patch up his seemingly perfect yet purposeless life.
Yaguchi explores this interest in the art world and before he realized it, he'd been absorbed into this insane artistic world that finally gave his life purpose. He'd developed an undying love and passion for art which he decided to chase wholefully by making it into the renowned university of arts, TUA. For this dream, he works tirelessly, learning more about art, developing his talents and while meeting other passionate artists, getting more deeply inspired towards getting better and making it in the art world.
Blue Period is an immersive story that shows you in depth the entire scenario of discovering a new dream that could change one's life forever and facing the hardships and frustrations while trying to rise above every obstacle that arises.
It's wholesome, inspiring and educative, and with all the gorgeous art representations, it's hard not to get enticed by this show.

3) TAKT OP: DESTINY
(Action, Music)

Here we have the king of all action animes this season, an anime original collaboration by the two legendary studios: MAPPA and Madhouse; Takt Op- Destiny.
Knowing these studios, and given the fact that anime originals have been great this year, it's hard not to expect at least a gorgeous adaptation, and that's exactly what we were given here.
In the year 2047, In a world were deadly monsters known as D2s exist which attack devastatingly whenever music is played anywhere, Takt Asahina, son of a legendary musician who's lived for nothing but music, takes up arms as a 'Conductor', with his battle companion or 'Musicart' Destiny travel the world in an action packed journey to New York City.
There isn't much more of a description I can give the plot given that it's a simple and straightforward one, but the production values in this show are just FANTASTIC.
This anime has an unnerving similarity to the Fate Series in production quality, plot setting and of course how dynamite their fight scenes are.
The fight sequences in this show are honestly the best this season with its stunning colourful effects, smooth animation and high quality music. The story seems to have emotional backdrops, and in terms of experience and enjoyability it's pretty much the best you'll get this season.

2) KOMI CAN'T COMMUNICATE
(Romance, Comedy)

Here we have the one and only most anticipated new anime of the season and probably of this entire year. For years fans have pleaded for an anime adaptation of this famed work, and this season our prayers we're answered and Komi San can't communicate graced our screens.
I'm sure the massive fanbase of the source material are immensely satisfied with just how beautiful this adaptation is. Studio OLM seems to have stepped up to produce what looks to be their most gorgeous work yet , and with another graciously adapted work from them airing in the same season-the Isekai Shokudou sequel, it just shows how hardworking the studio is.
It tells the story of Shoko Komi who's had a longstanding communication disorder since she was little, who gets enrolled in highschool where her beauty got her the attention of practically everyone around. Her communication disorder as expected causes a social quagmire in her highschool life and her seatmate/new friend Tadano is now determined to help her achieve her dream of making 100 friends in highschool.
This is undoubtedly the most charming anime this season. It's beautiful animation, character designs and music make it irresistible and it's well-executed humor make every episode a fantastic experience.
It's a fun romcom show that while being a light-hearted Highschool comedy still represents themes of the harsh life of communication disability.
It's wild and entertaining, Komi's encounters with the crazy characters in this show creates genuinely hilarious scenarios.
I love this anime and given its popularity and how stunningly adapted it is, it would honestly make sense to call this anime of the season; but in my opinion it was far overshadowed by just one new show.

1) RANKING OF KINGS
(Fantasy, Drama)

WIT studio has done a lot in these recent years and it's hard not to consider them one of the absolute greatest studios to ever exist.
From creating the modern classic phenomenon/one of the greatest animes ever; Attack on Titan, to creating modern masterpieces like Vinland Saga and Great Pretender, which I see as the absolute best animes of the past two years (2019, 2020).
Most recently this studio blessed the community once again with an excellent anime original, Vivy-Flourite Eyes Song, which still remains one of the best this year all things considered, but little did we know the studio was planning something even deeper.
Ousama Ranking did something no anime has ever been able to do to me, it tore my heart out right at the start.
There's honestly no anime this season or this entire year that I can call more captivating and emotionally triggering than Ranking of Kings.
Telling the story of a young deaf and mute prince Bojji, the first son of the great King Bosse and step brother to Prince Daida who was practically better than him at everything.
The first episodes perfectly captured that feeling of uselessness we've all felt in one deep way or another. Imagine being next in line to be king and a deaf weakling, in a world where strength and authority is everything.
Despite his royalty, he gets ostracized and belittled by everyone including his own family for being weak and disabled, and he tries so hard to look strong when it kills him deep inside. It's a very relatable feeling, and the one thing I can assure you in this show is that when Bojji breaks down, it'll have an impact on your very soul. Bojji is a delightful and cheerful kid who dreams of making everyone happy as king one day, and despite the scorn he faces daily, he moves forward towards this dream.
This anime is masterclass from all angles, the storytelling is beautifully paced and elevated by its outstanding production values, the lore is properly established and the mythical ambiance is developed properly in its progression.
The music quality is fantastic, the opening (Boy by Gnu) and ending (Oz by Yama) are pretty much the best this entire season, and the OSTs are beautiful and eloquenly placed in its emotionally resonant scenes to make it seemlessly impactful.
Don't judge this anime from the looks of it, but rather allow it to sink in as you progress and I promise you that nothing this year would touch you as deeply as Ranking of Kings.

There you have it guys, My Anime of The Season of Fall 2021: Ranking of Kings.

I think this season is definitely the best season this year after Spring, and pretty much every show mentioned on this list is amazing in their own way.
Netflix's upcoming anime series; Super Crooks looks great from the trailers and is gonna be out in about 3 days, I'll probably do an individual review to let you all know what I think of it, alongside JoJo's Bizarre Adventures: Stone Ocean .
Also among movie releases this season we have Sword Art Online: Progression and Jujutsu Kaisen: Zero which will probably be big hits when they get released both Theatrically and Digitally.
Among a few animes that didn't make the list;
Fruit of Evolution which seems nothing more than a cheap cardboard cutout of a basic Isekai, Tesla Note which is undisputed as the worst anime this season, Kaginado which is a cute, chibi crossover anime of famed SOL works, but doesn't seem like anything worth taking seriously.
There's also Rumble Grandoll, Muteking The Dancing Hero, Pure Ore: Pride of Orange, Visual Prison, Shikizakura and other subpar shows that will probably not be worth your time when the blockbusters on my list exist.

Thank you so much for reading this far.
Take my recommendations to heart guys, leave a comment of your thoughts and share this to anyone in need of great new anime shows to check out.

Stay Safe
Stay Sane
And I'll see you all in Winter 2022 for another Seasonal Review.
