Netflix has been on FIRE this second half of the year!; And as much as I'd love to get into detail in talking about the numerous hit shows and movies this network produced in the past few months, I'll save that for my monthly TV review.
Today I'll just focus on fulfilling the promise I made in my most recent Fall Anime Season review, and let you all know what I thought of the most recent entry to the Season's roaster from Netflix; Super Crooks, now that I've experienced it myself.
In light of Netflix's numerous successes recently, and after hearing that the company is at the helm of a new anime show to be animated by the legendary Studio Bones, it would only make sense to be excited in anticipation, but given that it's a spin off centered on characters existing in the same world as one of the of Netflix's recent failures: Jupiter's Legacy, my excitement was followed by mixed feelings and the latent fear of this show breaking Netflix's recent winning streak if it ends in disappointment.
From the title of this post, I think its pretty clear that I wasn't dissappointed by this anime at all.
Diving right in to the story description.
Johnny Bolt, a young ambitious highschooler who's had a longstanding fascination with Superheroes (and yeah, those do exist given this is The Jupiter's Legacy universe), while facing his troubling living conditions with a mom who doesn't think much of him while sleeping around with her numerous lovers and an absent dad, he surprisingly manifests powers; specifically the power to manipulate electricity.
As expected of naive kid, taking on the name 'Electro boy', his enthusiasm and hero complex leads to a disaster of massive proportion caused by his abilities.
After hitting this rock bottom, his desire to become a hero dies, and he dives into the sweet life of crime, using his power as a tool to make easy money.
Time skipped to Johnny's Adult years, where after spending time in prison, he gets out and further dables into the life of organized crime with a couple of small time super villains while finally enjoying life with his highschool crush turned lover, Kassy.
He gets hired by former Villain/Criminal Legend; Carmine a.k.a. 'The Heat' to join a team of handpicked talented supervillains to pull off one final big heist that could change their lives.
While the story and setting might not be anything new or original, it blends elements from similar renowned works creatively to give off its own charms, and with its great execution, create a thrilling experience with each passing episode.
It's safe to call this one of the most entertaining animes this entire year, and one thing I'll admit is, it's extremely engaging and for a crime anime, it literally stole my undivided attention with every passing episode (pun intended).
The execution is superb both in the crime elements and the action, not surprising given studio Bones being at the helm, and the stylistic flow of the scenery will make you find each episode irresistible until the very end.
It's really heartwarming to take into account of how the well executed flow of organized crime, witty characters, ambiance and the art style as well make Super Crooks a lot similar to my Favourite anime of last year, Great Pretender.
I'll also not fail to admit how the creatively established hero society, affixed with a lot of brutality in its fights and few twisted characters make it a lot similar to Amazon Prime's hit show; The Boys.
And one could even compare it to popular animes like Durarara and Gangsta in terms of its dialogues and overall feel.
The characterization is done really well, the side characters weren't only useful to further the plot progression but also just amazing and fun to watch.
Johnny Bolt was every bit the witty, brilliant and outstandingly cool main character he was set out to be, and with my favourite voice actor of all time, Kenjiro Tsuda voicing him, I couldn't help but find him irresistible.
The antagonists in this anime were just incredible with their contrasting ideals and they were made just powerful and influential enough to highlight just how high the stakes are for our main characters in their mission.
As I said earlier, the antagonists were made very capable, and even though I can't describe these fights as high-octane or explosive, they are brutal and just entertaining enough to keep your eyes peeled to your screens; and the end of it all was one I find really satisfying.
If I were to think of a point to take away from this show, it'd be that aside from its basic story, its characters were fun to watch but not really developed and the application of music in its scenery was just subpar and unimpactful.
All things considered, Super Crooks was an extremely fun show. A very worthwhile watch to anyone looking for something fun and engaging enough to expel boredom.
Its charming in its antics and if I were to give it a spot on my List of Best New Animes of Fall, it'd definitely crack the top 10 because I absolutely loved it.
So add Super Crooks to your lists guys because it's a show I feel no one should miss out on this season.
