DC fans, you guys have truly been through a lot of disappointments in the world of Comic Book Cinema, from one disastrous adaptation of your comic favourites to the next, and watching the rival fanbase experience mass success at every turn made it even more painful.
In light of these DCppointments, this year has been truly a shining light for the DC universe, given the positive response of the community towards the long awaited Zack Snyder's Justice League I reviewed earlier in " Zack Snyder's Justice League: A Beacon of Hope for the DC Universe ".
This year just got better for DC fans, because if the title of this post wasn't indication, the latest DCEU film " The Suicide Squad " was an absolute blast!, at least in my point of view.
From the comics, animations and the absolute disaster of a previous movie, I'm sure everyone has an idea of the plot structure and setting of the Suicide Squad. So, in this review, I'm not gonna bore you all by going deep into the details of the story or try to create some vague complex analysis, I'm gonna keep it short and sweet in telling you all why I absolutely loved James Gunn's Suicide Squad.
The title of this post clearly describes how I saw the experience of this movie. For an R-Rated antihero comic book movie, it practically satisfied all the requirements of a masterclass adult action movie in its adaptation. James Gunn incorporated his intelligently fun writing style into making this movie a non-stop joyride from start to finish.
The Characters being the pivotal part of the story were extremely well written and well executed by their cast in satisfying their given traits and roles in the plot. The new characters were every bit as colourful, quirky and interesting as intended and the returning cast felt fresh and invigorated with Gunn's writing style.
Bloodsport, the leader of the new Taskforce X/Suicide Squad in all his awesomeness and perfect portrayal by Idris Elba, was really compelling and the argument scene with his daughter in the first act of the movie pretty much got me hooked into the film and him as a character. Margot Robbie got me obsessed with her character, Harley Quinn in this movie, every bit the witty, twisted blood queen we know and love from the comics, remastered in a more fun and appealing way than in the previous Suicide Squad movie and Birds of Prey.
Aside from Bloodsport and Harley Quinn, the other characters were also really fun to watch given their fun personalities, unique powers and skillsets, crazy dynamics and hilarious interactions, all foreshadowed by their well-established backstories and ideals.
The stylistic and intelligent humor made it an even greater experience in watching these characters interact and move forward in fulfilling their mission.
Of course, all the action and all the fun weren't substituted for a fulfilling story. The plot in its progression was cohesive and packed with gruesome fight scenes, leaving room for many epic surprises. James Gunn finally got a chance to give us a wild and engaging Comic Book Action Packed teamup movie without the bounds of a PG-13 rating, allowing the Suicide Squad franchise to reach its full potential.
Now getting to the Visuals, Oh My God the Visuals!!...if I could describe the visuals of Black Widow as Dynamite, this would be a Nuclear Bomb. Adult violence presented in its highest quality in the many thrilling action sequences of this movie. It took the blood and gore of a typical R-rated movie to the extremes; we didn't just see a stab scene, we saw a piece of ceramic pierce a beating heart. The extremeness in the beautiful sequences of this movie were backed up by the amazing sound quality. Whether it's quality emotional music backing heartfelt moments, energizing fight OSTs playing during the fights or the orchestra during Harley Quinn's displays, the music quality was beyond competent.
Every aspect of the production contributed in making this movie a truly fantastic experience ; The strong acting, the comic accurate and colourful costume designs, the stunning visual effects, the thrilling fight sequences, the beautiful set designs and cinematography and the great soundtracks and sound effects all add up to make the 2 hours 13 minutes runtime of this movie an extreme rollercoaster. While I can't call The Suicide Squad the Best DC movie ever, I can call it the best Action-Comedy movie this year, at least so far.
If I were to give the movie a rating, it'd be a 9, taking a point away from the fact that in all its awesomeness, it did fulfill some basic action movie tropes like the effect of Plot Armors and Convieniences, but in a very sophisticated way. I loved every minute of it and consider it a big Win for the DC universe and I truly hope there are plans for subsequent movies of this same quality.
It's been fun guys, Go check out The Suicide Squad if you haven't , it's out on all platforms and share the link of this post to anyone looking for an honest review of it.
