The Refreshing Summer Anime Season of 2021

It's been over a month since the Summer Season started and it's been really quite eventful.
In the previous Seasonal reviews we've discussed the past two seasons in The Explosive Winter Anime Season of 2021 and The Colourful Spring Anime Season of 2021 ; posts which you should definitely check out if you haven't yet (by clicking the above text links).
Anyways now we'll be looking at the current season of anime; Summer in all its glory and flaws.
When I think of the word 'Summer', my mind immediately recalls the fun holidays, taking a trip to the beach; the heat of the sun, that cool summer air, the warmth of the sand, the sweet taste of lemonade and shaved Ice, the cool splashes of the ocean water and the overall wholesomeness of watching people have fun and romantic time together.
In terms of Symbolism, this anime season perfectly captures that Summer theme as most of the headlining releases are relaxing, easy-going shows that anyone looking to have a good time for the holidays would find enjoyable.
Fantasy, Comedy, Romance; three genres that provide a sense of escapism needed to fully represent a free-spirit season like summer, it's an amazing thing that those are the genres that stand out the most among the herd this season. Even the three big sequels we got this season are some of the most wholesome fantasy animes that exist.
"Fun" , "Relaxing", "Relieving", "Wholesome", "Rejuvenating"; honestly any of these qualifiers could be used accurately to describe this season, however I chose to use the word Refreshing because I feel that's the best possible way I could describe the experience of this anime season so far.
Now that I've babbled on about how this season's anime perfectly incorporated the feel of Summer, I'll now move on to introduce you to the 3 big Wholesome Fantasy Sequels this season, starting with the most anticipated; That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (Tensura) Season 2- 2nd Cour. Its first cour which aired in Winter was amazing as expected, capping off with Rimuru's revenge and ascension to Demon Lord. This season has been pretty promising so far, and things seem to be building up to a Saga between Demon Lords, I honestly can't wait to see the Demon Lord Rimuru, his newly released best friend; Storm Dragon- Veldora Tempest and the rest of his companions in action.
Moving on to the Second wholesome Isekai sequel with a female main character that's just as Lovable as Rimuru; My Next Life As A Villainess; All Routes Lead to Doom returning with its second season after a year.
Being completely honest, this is pretty much the most wholesome Isekai I've ever seen, the first season last year was really entertaining and amazing, masterfully blending it's romcom-harem features with a fantasy setting.
I've been absolutely loving it so far, the second season focusing on more characters and relationships than the first especially between our main character; Catarina Claes and her fiancé Prince Geordo.
All that being said, no Sequel this season left a bigger impact in its first few episodes than Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S , being every bit as crazy, hilarious, fun and effortlessly wholesome as the first season we all know and love. Season 2 literally started with a Bang, a heated well-animated battle between 2 powerful dragons, I mean, how much wilder could it get right?. Since it's start it's had an immensely entertaining run so far, delivering the pleasures and aesthetics that got the fans in love with it in the first place (KANNA BEING THE CUTEST THING EVER) . I'm really stunned to see what more surprises this sequel has in store for us in it's coming episodes.
The Continued Shows are also doing a great job of enhancing the experience this season; My Hero Academia Season 5 Tokyo Revengers and Welcome To Demon School Iruma Kun which continued from Spring with their 2nd cours have been really awesome and entertaining so far. One Piece and Boruto , the more long-running continued series have also been raising hype from the fans with their current epic arcs.
While praising the Sequels and Continued shows this season, I thoroughly refuse to acknowledge the existence of the Higurashi (2020) sequel or make an attempt to follow it in order not to ruin my summer feel with all its Psychological Trauma and Dimentia. Sorry Horror fans, but this isn't your season.
With that out of the way, let's get to the Main Course or Main Event if you will; The New Animes of Summer 2021.
This season has been quite colourful in its new anime releases, but in comparison to last season and like I said earlier, bulk of the frontrunners this season are either Fantasy, Romance, Comedy and Slice of Life or other relieving genres. Sure, there are a few new intense, action-packed and dark new animes this season that I will mention later but nothing as serious or tragically thematic as 86, To Your Eternity or Vivy.
The few intense animes this season just helps balance out all the summer relief with the thrill of competition and battles, and I've come to notice that even they have their redeeming themes and relief elements.
Last season in all its greatness must've been really hard on the anime community because we got more than enough fiery blockbusters airing in one Season. There was a lot of intensity everywhere and it's honestly a relief to have a more relieving and balanced season to follow.
Don't get me wrong though, in terms of new animes, even if the animes this season aren't as hype as last season, there are still many amazing new shows currently airing and like last season I'm here once more to introduce you to 20 New Anime Shows that I personally recommend, ranked according to my first impressions and how excellent they've been so far.

So let's get on with it shall we; Counting down my

TOP 20 BEST NEW ANIMES OF SUMMER 2021

20) GIRLFRIEND, GIRLFRIEND/KANOJO MO KANOJO
 (Romance, Comedy)

Once again, we start with a Rom-com at the very bottom of the list.
It's centered on Naoya Mukai who was lucky enough to have a girlfriend, Saki right at the very start of the story. Unlike most romcom MCs he seems to be a stud because before even the first episode ends, he gets a love confession from Nagisa, a girl that's a lot hotter and more feminine than Saki. As you notice, 'Girlfriend' is mentioned twice in the title of this anime, so of course he accepts this confession and decided to have two girlfriends and make them equally happy.
It's a bit of Déjà vu that once again a Romcom is at the bottom of the list and It's everyone's guess why. It failed to bring out the appealing parts of the genre. Although I do admit that it's a unique concept showing the awkwardness and complications of a three way relationship in the modern world, however I can still guarantee you cringing to this anime. The way it forces and overexaggerates every joke disqualifies it from being good at comedy and it has no sensitive dialogues to make me take any character seriously. Other than that it's pretty entertaining, so if you'd love a story about a couple of dumbasses in love, give it a try.

19) SPIRIT CHRONICLES/SEIREI GENSOUKI
 (Fantasy, Action)

Here we go, first Isekai on this list, Spirit Chronicles, centered on a teenage guy named Amakawa Haruto who aimed to reunite with his female childhood friend, before dying and being Isekai'd in the most horrifying way I've seen. The bus he was on stumbled and crashed and still got hit by a fast moving train, but instead of dying a double horrible death, he luckily wakes up in a Fantasy world in the body of Rio, a peasant boy who seeks revenge for his mother's death.
Along the lines, Haruto notices his memories mix up with Rio's memories creating a sense of conflict within him.
In terms of progression, it's no different than any other generic isekai, boy gets "special power", boy rescues princess, boy gets enrolled in magic academy and outshines his mates, boy becomes an adventurer....the same mediocrity we've seen in many other Isekais. The fight scenes are cool though so I guess it's pretty entertaining.
It might get deeper later because some light novel readers are hyping it up, but so far there's been nothing genuine or special about it.

18) THE MOTHER OF GODDESS' DORMITORY/ MEGAMI-RYOU NO RYOUBU-KUN
(Ecchi, Harem)

If the genres weren't any indication, this is one for the degenerates and although it says Ecchi it's one of those Hentais that leave out the sex part of it all.
Nagami Koushi, a 12 year old child who gets abandoned by his father after their home burnt down and this condemns him to severe poverty. After roaming the streets for a while and not becoming a drug dealer, he gets appointed to become the Dormitory Mother of a Dorm In a women's college of 5 special young women with body structures that fulfills every man's sexual fantasies, known as "Goddess Dormitory".
It should be a surprise that I'd tell you not to expect anything meaningful from this anime as it fulfills all the fundamental Ecchi-harem "accident" tropes constantly as the 12 year old kid is being subjected to endless indecency from the girls in the many fan-service fests of this anime. Like I said this anime is only for the "cultured", and I myself only consider this show a baby-mode Onee-san hentai, so follow this just for the horny thrills and degeneracy of it.

17) BATTLE GAME IN 5 SECONDS/DAETTE 5-BYOU DE BATTLE
(Action, Superpower)

Here's another anime for a specific kind of people and One of the very few action-packed animes this season.
If you loved Darwin's GameDanganronpa and Gleipnir, well, Death-Game Anime fans, here we go again.
Akira Shiroyanagi, a highschooler who loves games suddenly gets recruited by a mysterious girl named Mion, for an experiment where the participants are given special powers and forced to fight eachother in One-on-One or team battles where getting killed is highly likely.
Of course the main character is now determined to win this game and take down the association in charge of this madness.
If this sounds extremely similar to you, that's because it is. A less-appealing mashup of Danganronpa and Darwin's Game would be the best way I could possibly describe it.
It's really engaging with many unpredictable fight scenes, in all its blandness I can say it's at very entertaining for fans of deadly superpowered fights and mystery, the characters are every bit as quirky as aimed to be.

16) LOVE LIVE! SUPERSTAR!!
 (Music, School)

Hear me out
First of all, I do not wish to be judged for recommending a Love Live, because trying this out was pretty hard for me too. After thoroughly loving Zombieland Saga, I've come to open up more to "Idol" animes and how dramatic they can be, and of course another thing that pushed me into trying this out is it's rating on MAL which is the highest among new animes this season for now probably due to its dedicated fanbase.
Love Live! Superstar!! Is the newest release of the Love Live!! franchise centered on Kanon Shibuya, a highschool girl that realized at a very young age in a series of embarrassing events that although she has amazing musical talent, she can't sing in front of people. I can't call this the basic stage fright we're used to because she didn't just freeze, she straight up fainted in performances.
At least that was how it was until one day while singing by herself on her way to school, she gets overheard by a certain Chinese girl, Keke, who was amazed by her talent. Coincidentally they were in the same class, and after Keke followed and worried Kanon for a while she finally succumbed and agreed to join her in becoming "School Idols". Together they and three other talented young girls form a club of School Idols and chase their dreams and express their talents together.
One thing I'll say is, the first episodes of this anime truly were worth the watch and the quality of the animation and music made it even more plausible. It's only this low because only 3 episodes are out so far so I haven't really seen it in depth, but if it keeps the same energy as the first episodes then well, it may just go higher.

15) THE DUNGEON OF BLACK COMPANY/ MEIKYUU BLACK COMPANY
 (Fantasy, Comedy)
Another Isekai from the storm this season worth trying out is Meikyuu Black Company.
The show opens with our main character, an adult male named Kinji bragging about his accomplishments, about how he lived his entire life as a beer, doing nothing but staying indoors, playing video games and saving his allowances; he'd become the "Ultimate Neet", as he'd become overwhelmingly rich and successfull through that and making a few right business moves online.
He gets Isekai'd while doing so in a very Hilarious way, a mini black hole literally opened up in his apartment and sucked him in, to a land where he has to work extremely hard as a slave, an experience he never had to even come close to facing in the real world.
After being exposed to the frustration of brutal hardwork and inhumane treatment of the workers by the commanders, he decides to become the rich, successful neet he was in the real world in this fantasy world. Even after making a few oddly quirky companions and starting a secret mining company in a hidden dungeon, things don't seem to be looking easy for him in his goals and his journey takes route from there. I found it really hilarous and I'm loving the characters so far, even though I would admit it doesn't do more than entertain so far.

14) HOW A REALIST HERO REBUILT THE KINGDOM/ GENJITSU SHUGI YUUSHA NO OUKOKU
 (Fantasy, Magic)
The Second new Isekai on this list is a story centered on Kazuya Souma, a young man that was living with his grandfather, who died in Kazuya's youth, not before advising him to start a family in order not to be completely alone after his death.
Like I said it is an Isekai, and our main character was whisked away while reading in the library one day to a fantasy world; the Kingdom of Elfrieden, a kingdom which was facing many socio-economic problems and summoned a him as a hero to save them from it.
After a dialogue with the King of the kingdom realizes that Kazuya's knowledge from the real world could actually practically solve everything they were going through and he immediately dethrones himself, appointing Kazuya as the new king and giving his daughter to him as his fiancée.
Okay I'm just gonna say that if you go into this anime with expectations of the colourful power fantasy battles, you are going to find this show extremely boring. Kazuya proceeds to resolve the Nation's lingering problems, applying his vast knowledge from the real world, not through War but rather through such strategic means as administrative reforms and diplomacy. The show has been pretty interesting so far, it's filled with a lot good dialogues, world building and colourful characters that are mildly being introduced, if you love strategy isekai, this one's for you.

13) THE GREAT JAHY WILL NOT BE DEFEATED!/JAHY SAMA WA KUJIKENAI!
 (Fantasy, Comedy)

Speaking about Fantasy-comedies, here's one that's extremely similar yet fundamentally opposite to Meikyuu Black Company in setting.
An extremely successful main character being casted to a new world to suffer unfitting hardships, only this time it's the reverse of an Isekai and extremely similar to The Devil is a Part Timer in its story.
The Great Jahy, a beautiful and powerful being worshipped in the demon world as the 2nd in command to the Demon Lord gets defeated by a Magical girl one day, destroying the Netherworld and sending Jahy to the human world where she's without her powers, authority and even her majestic form.
It's a comedic tale of a fallen demonic ruler, as Jahy; now assuming a Loli form, uses the last fragment of her power to transform to her original form temporarily to go to work at a bar everyday in order to get money to sustain herself.
The humor of watching a former all-powerful being struggle to earn a living and being subjected and humbled by her superiors and living conditions made the first episode completely worth it. It's really funny and wholesome, and I'll understand if people compare this to Hataraku Maou Sama given how similar they are, but a distinctive aspect of its comedy is how, unlike Sadao Maou, Jahy hasn't completely succumbed as the title indicates, and still brags about her former glory, hoping to return to it one day.

12) LIFE LESSONS WITH URAMICHI-ONIISAN
 (Comedy, Slice of Life)

Among the herd of new comedy animes we got this season, one of the frontrunners and most unique of them all is Uramichi Oniisan, a dark comedy show about an incredibly athletic man named Omouta Uramichi who stars on a Children's educational TV programme as the coach.
In the course of doing his job which requires cheerfulness, he most times shows his frustration and resentment of the way his life is to the kids, by blurting out some depressing responses to their questions.
This anime is truly hilarous, but not in a pop-corn comedy manner, it's comedy ranges from Uramichi's awkward dynamic with his co-workers to his expressions of regret and depression to many other top notch comedy flicks you'll experience in this show.
In terms of production it's pretty well-handled, for one thing the main comedic duo; Uramichi and his kohai Usahara are voiced by Kamiya "Saiki Kusuo" Hiroshi and Sugita "Gintoki Sakata" Tomozaku respectively, and the other hilarous characters have great voices behind them too, elevating the experience. It's comedic characters have casts that are some of the best in the business and the jokes and nuances are actually great. it's an anime not really for everyone but really lovable to the ones that actually try it out.

11) THE DUKE OF DEATH AND HIS MAID/SHINIGAMI TO KURO MAID
 (Romance, Supernatural)

The Duke of Death and His Maid, being the second romance comedy on this list and one of the most anticipated new titles this season has been pretty good so far.
The story follows a certain young Duke who's name was never revealed for some reason, whom at a very young age received a curse from a witch that kills every living thing he touches instantly. This made his life very lonely and miserable as he was ostracized by everyone, including his own family and cast away to live alone in a huge mansion deep in the woods far away from human residence. Well, he's not entirely lonely, and his life isn't completely miserable as he has a beautiful maid, Alice, who loves and takes care of him, teases him sexually and keeps him company all day long. He does also have a butler, Rob who tends to him, but not as affectionatly as Alice, who tirelessly expresses her love and fondness for him. The Duke has admitted to be deeply in love with Alice, and while being frustrated by not being able to hold the one he loves, swears to break the curse one day and get married to her.
If there's one thing that put me off in this anime, it's the fact that J.C. Staff decided to animate this love story using CGi, and although I find that really unsettling I still can't help but get captivated by this love story and the excellent music quality in this anime.
It's a love story between two people closer than ever but bound apart by a wall of death...will it end happily for the couple? ...I can't help but wonder.

10) PEACHBOY RIVERSIDE
(Action, Supernatural)

How amazing is it that the creator of the most delightful sequel this season; Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, is also responsible for the darkest new show this season, Peachboy Riverside. Coolkyousinnjya, the author in question also has another new show higher up on the list, bearing similar routes in the direction of comedic fantasy to the affor-mentioned shows.
Peachboy Riverside centers in a Supernatural world where demonic beings with massive destructive capability named 'Ogres' exist alongside Demihumans, bearing different forms and power types indicated and released by their 'horns'.
In such a crazy world, a cheerful runaway princess who goes by "Sally", formerly Saltorine Aldike embarks on an adventure to find a samurai ogre-slayer named Mikoto Kibitsu who saved her kingdom a while back using a mysterious power which surpassed the power of the ogres.
In the course of her journey she encounters a gains a few interesting companions, discovers many unknown truths as well as the fact that she weilds the same power as Mikoto which manifested itself as an unusual bloodlust and visually as a glowing peach in her eye.
It's a really enjoyable show so far, the strongest suit of it to me is the music quality, the opening, ending and osts are all amazing. The fights and colourful characters and power types are also pretty neet, and the story which integrates elements from the Japanese Folktale, Momotaro seems to be moving smoothly. Despite all this it is pretty bland so far, I hope a lot more gets revealed in it's coming episodes.

9) TSUKIMICHI MOONLIT FANTASY
(Fantasy, Action)

Time to discuss the Isekai this season I see as the most enjoyable and entertaining.
Makoto Mitsumi suddenly gets summoned by a diety which reveals himself to be Tsukuyomi, a being which reveals to him that his parents are actually from another world, and made a deal a long time ago to trade their most precious possession in order to return to their home world. In light of this revelation he accepts the role of a brave hero about to be cast into a fantasy world, and gets sent to a Goddess who insults him for being ugly ,strips him of his hero title and gives him her worst possible blessing of being able to communicate in the language of every being other than humans and casts him go the ends of the world. Makoto notices his extraordinary magical and physical abilities he gained due to the diffences in the environment of his home world after a few altercations with several creatures and starts an adventure with the overpowered flawed monster-girl heroines he tamed.
While it does stand this high, I won't really call Tsukimichi the Best Isekai this season, mainly because of one more Non-fantasy Isekai I'll reveal soon, however I will call it the purest and most entertaining of the bunch.
Right from the very first scene, it acknowledges what it is and even parodies the tropes of its genre which were inverted in its own story. It executes it's comedy and bizarre character types really well and doesn't try to be anything it's not at all. It's really entertaining and fun, and the perfect new self-aware Isekai to escape this summer.

8) RE-MAIN
(Sports, Comedy)

Up next we've got Sports Anime of the Season; Re-main, bringing the pool play and beach ball vibes to complete the summer feel this season.
The Sport in question is Water Polo, and the story focuses on Minato Kiyomizu who quit the game after getting into a terrible accident in his third year of junior high, causing him to lose his memories.
Before the accident he was a really well-known prodigy in the game, but upon waking up he realizes he forgot everything about the Water Polo and his the time he spent playing it. It was really frustrating to his former teammates as well as his family.
After getting into highschool, he gets roped into taking up Water Polo again and with a set of unique and quirky teammates, embarks on a journey to rediscover the talent and passion for Water Polo he once had.
Like other sports anime, there isn't really much to say about it from here, it's been really enjoyable so far, I've loved the build-up and the characters and I can't wait for the competitions and developments to come.
I personally think the feel of an anime season isn't complete without the intensity of a Sports anime. Like we had SK8 The Infinity in Winter , Bakuten and Burning Kabaddi in Spring, Re-Main is the must-see sports title of Summer 2021.

7) THE DETECTIVE IS ALREADY DEAD/TANTEI WA MAOU SHINDEIRU
 (Mystery, Action)

If I were to name a single new anime title to stand as the most anticipated this season, that would be Tantei wa Maou Shindeiru. Readers of the source material wouldn't shut up about how great it was when this season was on its way and it's had a pretty great run so far.
The story follows Kimizuka Kimihiko whom in his teen years noticed he has an unusually high tendency to fall into unfortunate situations. He was pretty much a crisis-magnet of some sorts and whether it was stumbling into a crime scene or intercepting a drug deal, trouble seems to find Kimizuka at every corner.
Trouble certainly found our young crisis magnet aboard a plane flight one day, when the aircraft suddenly enters a state of emergency with a flight attendant requesting a detective onboard to solve a certain crisis. A young attractive teenage girl named Siesta steps up with her claims if being a 'Great Detective' and of course drags Kimihiko in as her 'Side Kick' and they both intuitively and violently solve the issue on the plane and after that go on solving countless cases together as partners, foiling plans of shady organizations.
LOL, that right there is just the prelude, as the actual story kicks off 3 years later when, as the title spoils, the Great Detective Siesta is already dead and Kimizuka had moved on and decided to live a normal teenage life in highschool, or at least try to.
Everything took a sudden turn for him towards the dramatic again as he gets approached by another attractive girl claiming to be a Great Detective with an unusual resemblance to Siesta.
Kimizuka gets pulled into the world of mystery and action again and goes on solving cases with her and several other new acquaintances he makes along the way.
The story is being told in fragments, showing the present plot developments while also showing the adventures of the dynamic crime solving duo, Siesta and Kimizuka in the past, of course in relation to the events leading to her death.
It's been quite interesting so far, the production quality is really good and although everything seems unclear right now, it seems to be building up to a seemingly great climax in its split timeline storytelling.

6) THE IDATEN DIETIES KNOW ONLY PEACE / HEION SEDAI IDATEN-TACHI
(Fantasy, Action)

Coolkyousinnjya is back again with the most fun anime this season, The Idaten Dieties only know peace.
This hilarous action-packed new fantasy show has a story that takes route in an ancient period where godly beings known as the Idaten exist, who use their overwhelming speed and strength to protect the human race by combating the demons that threatened the world. After a devastating war between the Idaten and the Demons that nearly left the world devastated, the Idaten warriors were successfully able to seal away the demons by sacrificing themselves, ending the longstanding war entirely and leaving the youngest Idaten, Rin in charge of watching the seal, taking care of the human race and grooming the future generation of Idaten.
800 years later, the humans now thrived in a more sophisticated and peaceful world, or at least that's how it was until a mysterious scientist in his experiments causes a demon to arise and wreak havoc.
The rogue demon was defeated by Hayato, a newer Idaten who'd trained under Rin for many years. He and his fellow new generation Idaten, Ysley and Paula, under the guidance of Rin, investigate and combat all other threats to humanity that erupt.
When I call this the most fun this season I mean it. Among new shows of Summer, it doesn't get more enjoyable than the Idaten Dieties. The comedy flicks are really well executed, driven by its many colourful characters. It's fight scenes are really amazing, Studio MAPPA's use of colour shades and sharp drifty animation style seem a lot similar to Trigger's Kill La Kill .
This is an anime you all definitely don't want to miss out on this season, it's fun, it's crazy, it really gives off the same vibe as Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid being centered on Overpowered beings in the human world, only more focused on the action this time. So go check out The Idaten Dieties Only Know Peace!.

5) SONNY BOY
(Sci-fi, Superpower)

The final and best Isekai on the list of New Animes of Summer is none other than the Madhouse TV Original; Sonny Boy.
It feels weird to even call this an Isekai given that it doesn't at all possess any typical isekai trait or satisfy any typical fantasy tropes.
Being completely out of the Fantasy genre, it's an Isekai purely from a Psychological perspective as the anime is literally centered on a school of 36 students who all suddenly drift away into another dimension covered in a completely dark and warped environment and begin to notice some students develop unique powers. A slight spoiler I'll reveal would be that that world wouldn't be the only world they drift into, overtime they suddenly get whisked into several other twisted worlds and while trying to understand and adapt to the unorthodox living conditions, they are also bounded by 'rules' based on real world ethics which they have to live by in order to avoid 'penalties' which manifest themselves in forms of physical reprecursions.
Sonny Boy is definitely the most twisted and unique anime this season. It's mind-bending visual imagery and sound editting allows it to generate a perfectly unsettling atmosphere almost naturally, allowing the viewers to feel a sense of confusion and dismay along side the characters whenever they experience something extraordinary in one of these new worlds.
Aside the superb visuals, there's so much more to find special in this show, the intuitively smooth dialogues, the uniquely interesting and quirky characters and the plot which is very engaging despite its many underlying mysteries.
If you're in the mood for something unusual yet systematically intriguing this season, I definitely recommend Sonny Boy.

4) OPERA GIRL! / KAGEKI SHOJO!
(Drama, Slice of Life)

Every season has that one or few gems that in all their greatness are still overlooked by almost the entire anime community due to its seemingly unappealing setting, and while last season had Odd Taxi and Link Click, Summer 2021 has Kageki Shoujo.
If the title wasn't any indication, this is a shojo anime and that immediately proposes the idea that it's not for everyone. However, one thing I can say about this show is that it's bound to captivate anyone who checks it out with an open mind.
The story is set in Kouka High School, a prestigious musical acting school where young girls get quality education in order to chase their dreams in becoming stars on the grand stage in the world of art.
At the center of all this is our two main leads; Ai Narata, a former popular idol who became antisocial, gave up the stage and developed a fear of men due to the sexual harassment she faced in her childhood; and Sarasa Watanabe, a tall extremely cheerful and lively young girl who aspired to become the 'Top Star' at Kouka high. Although it took them a while due to their contrasting character types, the two develop an unusual dynamic as friends and classmates and face the path towards their dreams, overcoming their challenges and insecurities together.
Unlike a lot of its shojo counterparts, this anime is one which tells extremely captivating stories of the characters in a more direct and thematic way, perfectly balancing it's lighter elements with its more emotional and intensely dramatic aspects.
Chasing dreams is hard, especially having baggages of the past and present conditions that seem to haunt you at every corner. This anime captures that perfectly as it sufficiently develops it's characters with its impactful dialogues and backstories.
This anime may not be the best this season, but I can call it the most instantly charming, and in all its charm delivers quality heartgripping moments. So go check out Kageki Shoujo if you haven't as I personally recommend it as the 4th best anime this season.

3) THE AQUATOPE ON WHITE SAND / SHIROI SUNA NO AQUATOPE
(Slice of Life, Drama)

Speaking about the Summer Feel, among new shows this season, none delivers the heartwarming summer aesthetics more than Aquatope on White Sand.
For a new Slice of Life anime from P.A. Works, it was pretty much guaranteed to look great, but it's honestly unnerving how visually stunning and gorgeous it showed itself to be right from he start.
Similar to Kageki Shojo, it's a story centered on two girls who got pulled towards eachother by the strings of fate, one being a former idol, only in this anime, the effect of Fate is a lot more pronounced in the flow of events and story progression.
Fouka Miyazawa, the former idol in question, after giving up on her dreams and career, moves away from her home and family in Tokyo to Okinawa without any plans or certain destination. After aimlessly wandering the area for several hours, she finds herself in Gama Gama Aquarium, where she emotionally reflects on her life and how she'd lost everything despite her efforts but suddenly gets enchanted by the magic of the aquarium. By magic I don't mean literal magic but rather the special feel of the aquarium and the aesthetically pleasing view which was perfectly represented by the stellar production values of this anime. Fouka immediately realizes that's where she's meant to be, and after meeting the young director of the aquarium, Kukuru Misakino, she literally begs to stay and become a part of this magical place that saved her at her lowest point. Fouka gets accepted by Kukuru, her family and the rest of the staff at Gama Gama Aquarium and works hand in hand with them in helping everyone who visits the Aquarium find full satisfaction and absolution the same way it helped her.
It's an effortlessly wholesome and refreshing anime to catch up on, watching a young girl who felt she lost her place in the world rediscover herself through her attachment to this magical place and the experiences she has with her new acquaintances. Her growing dynamic with Kukuru and the other characters she connected with in this new location is really something to love in this show.
Aquatope on White Sand is pretty much the most gorgeous anime this season. It's art and animation quality is just beautiful and the music quality is pretty much the best this season, so it's definitely one that fans of well produced slice of life would fall in love with.

2) THE CASE STUDY OF VANITAS / VANITAS NO CARTE
(Supernatural, Historical)

Studio Bones has been a pivotal part of the anime industry especially the new generation with such solid smash hits as My Hero Academia, Mob Psycho 100, Bungou Stray Dogs, THE Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, Noragami, Soul Eater and others. In fact one could say that the studio highlights Superpowered Shounen Battle anime perfectly.
This season, newest show from Bones, The Case Study of Vanitas, while being a Solid Smash hit, diverts from the studio's specialty with a Historical-Supernatural setting and exceeded in flying colours.
In a controlled vampire-filled society, Noé, a kindhearted gentleman vampire, travels the world in search of the "Book of Vanitas", an ancient grimoire created years ago in order to destroy Vampire-kind by a legendary Vampire named Vanitas, who was hated and discriminated against for being born under the blue moon instead of the crimson one which most vampires are born under.
In his travels, he one day runs into a 'cursed vampire', one which lost all control and attacks indiscriminately like the scary creatures we know from the stories and  during his altercation with it he encounters a mysterious human doctor who inherited the name and book of Vanitas he'd been searching for, who claimed his aim was to "Save the Vampires" using the power of the grimoire as his ultimate revenge against its creator and his former master, Vanitas.

Vanitas demonstrates the power of the Book of Vanitas in curing the Cursed vampire by recovering it's 'true name' leaving Noé stunned and intrigued by the display.
That pretty much marked the end of Noé's peaceful days as he joins Vanitas on a turmoil filled journey towards his goal using the power of the book, meeting tons of amazing characters along the way.
If I could call The Idaten Dieties the most fun this season, The Case Study of Vanitas is definitely the most enjoyable and instantly lovable.

The nuanced dynamic between the two main lead characters in their adventures is really something special, well executed through stunning character writing and amazing dialogues. Vanitas is pretty much the most stunning character this season,  his mannerisms, extreme expressions and bizarre unpredictable reactions to intense situations are pretty much enough to drag you into this show. Noé is also almost equally compelling as a character through his beautifully laid out backstories and systematic development during his action packed journey with Vanitas. Watching these two constantly get into dyer situations and plunge their way out of it through their bizarre powers, surprising eachother at every turn makes this pretty much the most entertaining anime this season. The colourful and quirky side characters and antagonists in this show are also perfectly executed, making it even greater as a show.

The plot has been really cohesive, engaging and sometimes even emotionally captivating.  The visuals are better than they have any right to be, it's impossible not to get bewitched by the dazzling displays and scenery enhanced by the top quality animation and music.

With the level of perfection in it's run so far and it's acceptance by the community this season, it's pretty much bound to be seen as Summer 2021's Anime of the Season to a great number of anime fans, however in my opinion , it gets overshadowed by just one new show this season.

1) REMAKE OUR LIFE / BOKUTACHI NO REMAKE
(Slice of Life, Drama)

Once every season there comes that one new show that steals your heart and enchants you right from the first episode, providing the strongest first impression and clarity that with the level of quality displayed right at the start, it's definitely going to be one of the best that season and that year as a whole.
For me, Bokutachi no Remake does this perfectly as it's 50 minute long debut episode was the most impactful and engaging pilot I've seen all season and it's maintained that energy throughout its spectacular run so far.
The story follows 28 year old Hashiba Kyouya, whom after leaving his office job to pursue a career in his favourite gaming company, but hits a wall when due to certain financial issues of the company, he loses his job there too.
Kyouya hits rock bottom as he is now rendered jobless, being forced to move back in with his parents, he  reflects on the poor  life choices that got him this low. He regrets not chasing his dreams and going into arts school but instead going to a normal university as he admires the works of his agemates who succeeded in the world of art.
This shows how Real this show gets right from the start. Life is really fucked up. One wrong decision as to how you choose to live your life could literally destroy you in the future and before you even realize it you're facing a number of problems, facing depression and despair, all emanating from that wrong path you've chosen. This anime captures that perfectly as Hashiba Kyouya had already accepted his current status as a failure he caused for himself and made peace with the fact that life doesn't give second chances.

Fortunately for him, life did grant him a second chance as in that moment of reflection, he dozes off only to wake up 10 years in the past, being granted the opportunity to completely overturn his life. Kyouya immediately takes the opportunity granted to him by fate and decides to fix his life, follow his dreams this time and live a life of no regrets. He enrolled at Oonaka Arts University where he immediately runs into Eiko Kawasegawa, his former boss, younger of course and gets grouped with talented rookie artist Aki Shino, aspiring singer and actress Nanako Kogure and naturally gifted writer Tsurayuki Rokuonji as housemates and project partners , who actually turned out to be the stars he admired in his adulthood in the first place.

Together he works hand in hand with his partners at the university, and for every project they complete together, they grow and through their education, venture closer to realizing their full potential as creators and make an impact in the world of art.
In its 6 episode run so far, Remake our Life in its story telling has been extremely mature, extremely sophisticated, extremely captivating and extremely engaging. For years and years of going through many Slice of Life anime, it's a great thing to finally encounter a university set anime that escapes the generic comedy and romance tropes to capture the actual 'Education' of it all.

It exposes you to the world of Visual Art and Film-making; the processes, the ethics, the methods, the difficulties, everything involved in the complex venture that is Filmography.
Being someone who loves cinema, I really appreciate this value and the dialogues are so intuitive and well executed that you literally learn a lot just by watching the characters talk.
Chasing dreams isn't an easy thing at all, and it's represented really well in this anime as the heartfelt character moments and emotional expressions are every bit as impactful and captivating as aimed to be.
Remake our Life stands at the top of this list because it's done a lot more with its characters and themes than any other show listed here. In terms of Character Development, it's been truly spectacular so far as each of the main team has been given compelling backstories and motivations, being given moments where they face hurdles in chasing their dreams and rising above them.

It of course isn't devoid of Romance and comedic elements, but faces them in a very grounded and mature manner, making it a very well-rounded and enjoyable new show I already see as the absolute best Slice of Life Anime of the year so far.

So there you have it guys, my Anime of the Season of Summer 2021: Remake Our Life.

Make sure to check out a good number of these shows to get the full summer experience this season especially the top ones.

Among the notable animes that didn't make the list we have;
Pirate Princess (Kaizoku no Oujo) , a last minute entry this season that presented itself in its first episodes as nothing more than a low quality parody or rip-off of Akatsuki no Yona.
There's also the Mahouka Spin-off; The Honor at Magic High , which is pretty much the same story as The Irregular at Magic High, just told through the eyes of Miyuki Shiba. Being the main story but with a main character that's a Simp and not an Overpowered Edgelord, it's even more trashy and mediocre than the main show.
Records of Ragnarok  , the Netflix anime TV which kicked off this season with disappointment being one of the worst popular manga adaptations of the past few years.

Among the rest there's Obey Me , a useless fan-service fair for girls and gay people which I couldn't finish an episode of even though it's runtime is just 5 mins, Scarlett Nexus that's the worst copy of Seraph of the End I've ever seen, Drug Store in Another World , easily the worst Isekai this season tied with  I'm Standing on a Million Lives Season 2 , Night Head 2041 and D_Cide Traumerei that are both the most horrible dumpster fires this season.

Anime Movies also contributed in making this season memorable; My Hero Academia's third movie: World Heroes Mission  got released a while ago and has been really successful in its grossing ever since. Fate/Grand Order : Final Singularity  also got released theatrically a while ago and while we're still waiting on the digital release of that, let's discuss the ones which are out to watch Digitally. Gintama: The Final Movie got releasd digitally last month and ended up being one of the greatest things ever! (Will definitely blog about that soon). Digital releases of Josee: The Tiger and Fish and  Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 : Thrice Upon a Time also dropped during this season and both were completely spectacular movies. Netflix's Words Bubble Up Like a Soda Pop being the only unimpressive movie release this season.

All in all, this season has been really entertaining so far, really refreshing for a season like Summer and although it may seem like step down or disappointment due to the fact that we just got 2 of the greatest anime seasons ever back to back in Winter and Spring, this season is one you'll truly value if you pick the right bunch of shows to follow.

If you didn't dig the animes this season, don't fret, because next season, Fall will soon be here and it's pack full of highly anticipated new bangers like Komi Can't Communicate , Mieruko-chan , Blue Period and Deathnote creator's Platinum End . Also the return of smash hits like Mushoku Tensei, 86, World Trigger, Date A Live, Demon Slayer and JoJo's Bizarre Adventures.
So Fall's already looking pretty great, I'll be right here to guide you all through it.

It's been fun
