This past weekend officially marked the halfway point of the Spring season of 2021 and the one thing I can say about this season so far it's that it's truly been full of surprises.
In the post I made earlier about the previous season titled "The Explosive Winter Anime Season of 2021", I explicitly stated and explained everything that makes Winter 2021 a blockbuster season and one of the single greatest seasons of anime ever. This sentiment was shared by practically the entire anime community as not only did we get so many great sequels lead by Attack on Titan and Rezero, we also got a good number of amazing new shows as well with Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation , Horimiya and Wonder Egg Priority being the most beloved.
Most of the hype generated for an upcoming season of anime is brought about by the upcoming sequels of popular franchises attached to it and in Winter, we got a stunning number of 13 sequels of well known franchises. However, this season we only got 7 and being honest they're pale in comparison to the popularity of the hit Winter sequels and this lowered the hype level and general expectations of this season from fans in general.
My Hero Academia Season 5 being a clear exception as fans were madly eager to see the upcoming season of the golden child of new generation shounen anime which only gets more loved by fans the more season it gets. This season's first part focusing on the Joint Training Arc between Class 1A and Class 1B, which was done in form of grouped battles between the two classes. It's really starting to heat up as this arc introduces us to a lot of new talented characters from Class 1B and the results of the hardwork both classes have put into themselves thus far, laying a solid foundation for the future generation of heroes of the MHAverse.
Aside from MHA, other sequels this season are also doing pretty great. Fruits Basket which blew me away with its first 2 seasons and became one of my favourite animes ever, leading all other sequels this season with its Final Season which has been completely phenomenal so far. Megalo Box: Nomad also another front-running sequel this season giving us a new dramatic perspective to the underdog boxing story of Gearless Joe told in the first season, Moriaty The Patriot being an even more classic as a Historical-Mystery show with its 2nd Cour , Our favourite Zombie Idol group; Franchouchou returning in Zombieland Saga: Revenge which has been a fun and entertaining new season so far and B: The Beginning which practically kicked off the season with the first part of its new season titled; Succession .
The 7th popular sequel to be named here is How Not To Summon a Demon Lord which is very popular among Isekai and Ecchi fans alike, it's new season being even more ridiculous than the first. Welcome to Demon School! Iruma Kun also has a 2nd season airing which has been really fun so far but I wouldn't consider that as a popular anime sequel on the grand scale
When it comes to new seasonal anime, most of the hype generated are owed to the source material readers of the upcoming new shows. The most popular source materials then become the most anticipated anime of each season and the ones that raises the most noise that season. However, every good season doesn't come without that one or few new shows that completely blows everyone away despite being practically unknown beforehand. Winter 2021 had Mushoku Tensei and Horimiya, the hits which both have very popular source materials, however it also had Wonder Egg Priority , the sleeper hit that surprisingly captivated everyone who watched it.
This season has no shortage of these surprisingly amazing shows and out of 30+ new shows this season, half of these are hidden treasures just waiting to be seen by curious weebs. In the title of this post I used the term "Colourful", indicating that there is a wide variety in the types of shows this season channeled to meet the different tastes and preferences of different fans in the anime community and most of these are genuinely worth watching.
The honest reason this post didn't come sooner is because there are a lot of great new stuff this season and I found it hard picking the ones to recommend because even I at one point couldn't even choose the ones to follow.
Anyways, I've decided to do what I did in the last Seasonal Anime Rundown post, counting down the Best New Anime shows of the season so far.
But hold on to your coffee mug guys because this time, in order to show just how stacked this season is with good shows, the list will contain 20 New Anime this season, which is double the amount listed in my last countdown.
So let's go guys, this is bound to be my longest write-up yet as I count down my...
TOP 20 BEST NEW ANIME OF SPRING 2021
20.) KOIKIMO: ITS TOO SICK TO CALL THIS LOVE
(Romance, Comedy, Slice of Life)
This is one which would probably be higher on the list of addicted Romcom fans. Koikimo is a romance-comedy story of a high spec businessman Amukusa Ryo who nearly gets injured in a near stairway accident at work but gets saved by a young highschooler, Arima Ichika that coincidentally turned out to be his Sister, Rio's best friend. The chanced encounter between the two triggered something unothodox as for the first time, the extremely attractive Ryo who was very loose with women, fell in love. This causes him to make direct moves and gestures to show his love for Ichika which she responds to in a very disgusted manner, hence the title of this show. The story is one filled with comedy as the dynamic between the main ship develops as they discover more about eachother and it's a show thats very enjoyable if you're just here for the fun and could look past the lingering age gap problem between the main couple and the basic writing.
(Romance, Comedy, Drama)
The childhood friend is a very common trope in modern day romcom anime, most times being that one admirer that gets sidelined by the main character due to his growing relationship with the main love interest.
Well if the title wasn't any clear indication, this anime is one which toys with that concept directly being one where all possible love interests and admirers of the main character are childhood friends.
Former Child actor prodigy Maru Sueharu has had a long standing crush on his classmate and award winning author Kachi Shirokasa, who seemed to be the school's cold-hearted idol but opened herself up more when they were alone. His nextdoor neighbor and close childhood friend the cute and lovely Shida Kuroha openly showing her love for him but being sidelined and upon discovering that his crush had a boyfriend, they plan the ultimate revenge which leads to a lot of romantic twists later on. A really fun show to catch up on, I just wish it handled it's themes and character stories more delicately.
(Action, Shounen, Comedy)
This entry probably doesn't need much introduction or any any at all, being the remake of the popular shounen Supernatural battle anime of 2001.
The story follows a legendary tournament which occurs every 500 years where 'Shamans', beings whom weild spirit powers tasked with keeping the balance between the real world and the supernatural, fight to determine who'll become the next Shaman King and have authority over the Great Spirit to reshape the world as they want or grant their wishes. The main character being Asakura Yoh who meets and makes friends with middle schooler Manta Oyamada, who supports him in his goal of becoming Shaman King to make his life easier. For this goal he fights weilding the power of the great Samurai from 600 years ago, Amidamaru, making allies along the way. It's fun and action packed and Its honestly this low because it's has no special or distinctive features from other shounen of its kind.
(Music, Drama, Shounen)
Being the music anime of the season, Mashiro no Oto focuses on the journey of Sawamura Setsu, who grew up loving the music his grandfather plays on his Shamisen. The Shamisen is a traditional Japanese stringed instrument and his Grandfather Matsugorou Sawamura was one of the greatest players of the Shamisen in history. The loss of his grandfather lead to a turning point in young Setsu's life as the talent and interest he developed in the Shamisen both took a downturn. He stated that he "Lost his sound" as he had the unique quirk of producing sounds that emanate how he feels, and the feeling of depression caused him to quit the Shamisen, drop out of highschool and move to Tokyo to gain new experiences. Due to some chanced encounters, he finds himself playing the Shamisen again as he enrolls in Umezono Academy and joins the Shamisen Appreciation club where he makes new friends and embarks on a musical journey to rediscover his passion.
With a premise like that, this anime honestly has every right to be higher but the flow of events felt too unnatural and key moments felt like a repitition of other hit musical anime.
(Sports, Shounen, Comedy)
This season had a reasonable number of sports anime for a new season and only two of them made this list, the first of which being Backflip!!.
Backflip!! follows the story of Shotaro Futaba who was dazzled by the performance of the men's rhythmic gymnastics team of Ao highschool in a tournament and even if the school sadly didn't qualify, his lingering interest in that performance made him realize rhythmic gymnastics may be his calling after all. He enrolls into the school and joins the team of unique seniors and prodigy Misato Yoshiga and together he grows with the rest of the team and hopes to recreate the magic that dazzled him with the team.
The thing to really love about this show is the characters. Different personalities, dynamics, interactions that are genuinely fun to watch and even though the highlight scenes may seem cringe with its effects and 3D motion, it's a genuinely fun watch.
(Fantasy, Comedy, Action)
From the name of this show it's already pretty clear this is a comedy and some sort of parody, it took a while to realize the Alicization arc of Sword Art Online was what was being parodied here.
Yuuki Hiro loves to spend his free time playing Full Dive RPGs, in an attempt to purchase the latest model of his favourite RPG he ends up being lured by Reona Kisaragi, manager of the game store to try out a new game "Kisame Quest" which has been said to chase the ultimate realism. Upon trying out the game, Hiro realizes they weren't kidding around as the pain of real world experiences which would normally be escaped in a typical game were replicated in this game. Being hit in the game actually hurt, wounds took days to heal, NPCs have actual personalities and memories, every action taken has actual consequences and a player's abilities in the game are only a reflection of his real world abilities. Discovering this late created a hilarious twist for Hiro as he kept spiraling from one unfortunate scenario to an even worse one with Reona as his guide making this a very enjoyable, fun and surprising show to catch up on.
(Slice of Life, School)
For a season stacked with so much heated action, comedy and spicy romance, there's a need to balance it out with a nice relaxing show to ease the tension and Super Cub is a great one to try out.
2nd year highschooler Koguma being the main character, led a very uneventful and uninteresting life, having no family, friends or hobbies to give her life a spark of excitement. She spurringly decided to buy a 2nd-hand Honda Super Cub motorcycle which was known to have caused misfortune and death to its previous owners making it cheaper than normal. After purchasing this 'cursed' motorcycle, her world started opening up. Long rides on her motorcycle became her salvation and she finally had something to yearn for. "I have no parents, no friends, no money but at least I have my Cub" so she says in appreciation of her new found joy, but overtime her world opens up even more and she gains friends and even a job.
If you enjoyed gentle relaxing moe shows like Non Non Biyori and Yuru Camp, you'll certainly love Super Cub.
(Fantasy, Slice of Life, Romance)
Like last season, Spring 2021 didn't come without its new Isekai shows and The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent is certainly one of the good ones. Don't be deceived by the name tho, it's not one of those Isekai with powerful main character flexes and lots of fights, it's actually a relaxing slice of life take on the genre, similar to Hamefura.
Sei, a 20 year old office worker suddenly gets whisked away to a fantasy world on her way home from work one day and she quickly realized she wasn't the only one who was summoned. A younger girl who looked equally as confused and out of place as her was also there and apparently it was due a spell cast to summon a 'Saint' to banish dark magic from their world. The second girl was favoured and taken to the royal palace whereas Sei chose the simple life of making healing potions and accessories for knights with her her newly discovered magic which was unnaturally powerful.
It's a smooth and relaxing adventure for Sei as she learns more about the world and makes friends along the way.
(Fantasy, Comedy, Action)
The Saint's Magic is Overpowered wasn't the only lighter themed Isekai released this season as this next one is one I recommend even more strongly than the latter.
I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out my level focuses on the story of Azuza Aizawa, a salary woman who was so dedicated to her workload she literally died from it. But death wasn't the end for her as she gets reincarnated into a fantasy world as an immortal witch by a diety by her own request. In this her new life, she had only one purpose and that was to live a "slow life". Relaxing and enjoying simple pleasures which were a big contrast to how she lived previously. She decided not to do anything distinctive, living easy and far away in the highlands, killing slimes for money and she did this for 300 years. The hilarious twist in this anime came after this timeskip as she literally became the most powerful witch ever just by killing those slimes for 300 years which gave her a lot of attention she didn't want and even earned her the nickname "The Witch of The Highlands"
In her new home she makes a lot of friends and slowly builds a family for herself while living the sweet and slow life.
It's a wholesome, hilarious and fulfilling watch every episode which was really surprising to me.
(Sports, Comedy, School)
Earlier on I talked about Bakuten!!, But it wasn't the only Sports anime this season. The Sports anime that leaves an even bigger impact on me every week is Burning Kabaddi.
The one thing Sports anime does that's so impressive is bringing in a sport that barely anyone cares about and getting many people interested in and actually excited to watch it being played in anime. Burning Kabaddi did just this because I'm very sure a lot of people who haven't seen this anime don't know what Kabaddi is. But anyone who watches this anime is guaranteed to feel the excitement of the sport.
The anime follows the story of Tatsuya Yoigoshi, a former child prodigy soccer player known as "The Unstoppable" who lost all interest and love for sports and decided it was too much stress after a long period of feeling unsatisfied during games.
Being a student of Noukin high and not having any interest in sports, he spent most of his time live streaming. He suddenly gets invited to join the Kabaddi club of his highschool and after giving the game a try, he realizes it's nothing like soccer he was used to and although it took him a while at first, Yoigoshi was pulled into the burning and passionate world of Kabaddi, a game where team work is everything and wits, flexibility, power, speed and experience come into play. It's honestly an exciting anime that I'd recommend to anyone who loves intense competition and fun.
(Comedy, Slice of Life, Romance)
When it comes to new anime this season, Don't Toy with me Miss Nagatoro was definitely one of the most anticipated titles to be dropped this season. That's because similar to Takagi San and Uzaki Chan, this anime was one in the teaser architypes of the Romcom genre which was guaranteed to give us a spicy episode every week.
There isn't really much to say about the premise and setting of this romcom as the entire anime hinges on the growing dynamic of the main chatacters. During liesure hours on a fateful afternoon, our geeky young main character only known as 'Senpai' who was an aspiring artist meets Hayase Nagatoro, a quirky underclassman who teases him pretty intensely on their first encounter after reading his manga. The teasing becomes a regular thing as he tirelessly gets roped into her antics on a daily basis and although it seemed annoying at first, our young MC comes to realize he doesn't dislike being bothered by her and the geeky loner finally had someone giving him endless attention and sparking up his day. The thing to love the most about this anime is just the cute and wholesome setting, the growing relationship of these two characters creates a fun and entertaining watch every week and I can't help but anticipate the next episode which drops every Saturday.
(Comedy, Action, Fantasy)
Speaking about fun animes, this season it doesn't get more fun than Sentouin Hakenshimasu. By far the most hilarious anime this season which is an extremely similar in setting to Konosuba, steming from the fact that they bear the same creator.
This is an Isekai guaranteed to bring out genuine laughs from you momentarily every episode as it has all the makings of good comedy anime.
The perverted main character only known as Combat Agent Six works for an Evil Organisation known as the Kisaragi Corporation which specialises in domination of other earth-like worlds using the power of technology and science by dispatching Combat agents into that planet. Agent Six, accompanied by the newly developed combat android Alice gets sent to a world with a fantasy setting to spy on it and gather "evil points" by performing devious acts. They get into a kingdom known as the "Kingdom of Grace" where they encounter other interesting characters in the show ; Snow, Rose, Grimm and the Princess. Six and Alice decides to help out the kingdom in the demon lord's army invasion and the fun comedic adventure takes flight from there.
Like I said this anime is really funny and really enjoyable and similar to Konosuba, each character has a weird side that makes for a hilarious dynamic between the different personalities in this show.
(Mystery, School, Comedy)
We've talked about the intense, the wholesome and the hilarious this season but how about the dazzling. The rules of the Pretty Boy Detective Club are as follows; "Be Pretty", "Be a Boy" and "Be a Detective" and if you've seen even an episode of this anime, you can attest to the first rule being completely accurate in this adaptation. The visual aspect is simply gorgeous as the colourful and sparkling character designs and animation stole my attention, which is a great feat for an anime which focuses on the theme of 'Beauty'.
Middle schooler Doujima Mayumi who's had extraordinary eyes since birth, notices that a certain star which only she could see gets missing and to solve this mystery she consults the Pretty Boy Detective Club which solves cases for aesthetics rather than money. There she notices the members of the club were very popular handsome figures in her school with the exception of the excessively enthusiastic leader of the club Sotouin Manabu, each having their unique quirks and talents. She gets pulled into an adventure filled with mystery and glamour and walks the path of 'Beauty' with the Pretty Boy Detective Club in solving cases.
It's a genuinely fun, interesting and stunning new show to catch up on.
(Seinen, Slice of Life, Supernatural)
Pretty Boy Detective Club marks the end of the amazing fun animes on this list to catch up on, now we'll talk about the more serious and thematic new shows which are the best this season. When I think of the Dark themed shows this season, the first thing that comes to mind is Shadow House.
Shadow House is the newest anime from the famed studio; Cloverworks that gave us the beloved Horimiya and Wonder Egg Priority in Winter, and the fact that this anime is on this list shows that this studio hadn't run out of surprises for us this year.
The story focuses on mysterious Mansion known as Shadow House occupied by faceless shadow nobles who are attended to by human like dolls known as "living dolls" given to each person to clean off the soot they emit endlessly from their body and act as their faces. Each Noble is required to bond with his/her living doll on a deep level and the main character, a cute, cheerful and kind-hearted living doll named Emilico tries her hardest to make her Mistress Kate happy even though their character types are nothing alike. The interaction with other nobles and dolls in the show and learning more about the mysteries and structure of the Shadow House makes this a truly intriguing show and one I'd recommend to fans of slow paced mystery.
(Drama, Mystery)
Here's a hidden gem I'm sure many may bypass and not even give a chance compared to the other hard hitters this season as I almost did.
Even after loving Beastars and thoroughly enjoying BNA and Aggretsuko, the human-like animal world anime architype is one which still surprises me with how amazing and intriguing they end up being.
Odd Taxi is a well paced drama-mystery anime with a story centered on Odokawa, the eccentric hippo which lives a very simple, ordinary life as taxi driver and barely has any friends, hobbies or distinctive attributes. He stays away from everything that could possibly cause him trouble, bearing a constant indifferent facial expression as he lives an easy life, but all this takes a sudden turn towards the interesting as he meets a few other quirky characters in the show in his taxi pickups and gets mixed up in the affairs of a low level street thug, Dobu. There really isn't much to say about the premise of this show as it's showing itself to be an easy going mystery show that builds on it's characters and events gently with each passing episode. I honestly recommend this anime to everyone who hasn't seen it yet because it's one you're guaranteed to value if you actually give it a chance.
(Action, Shounen, Comedy)
When we're young we can't help but wonder how we'll turn out in the future. Having dreams and visions of your future and wondering if you actually accomplish them or end up being a complete loser. The main character of this show, Hanagaki Takemichi drew the short straw on that one as his adult life reeks of disappointment. He lives in a literal dump, thriving on his low salary job and has no friends or female partner. He gets stunned when he hears the news that the only girl he's ever dated; Tachibana Hina and her little brother had died and was killed by the Tokyo Manji Gang, a viscous band of criminals that's been causing trouble in the community for a long while. The feeling of shock and regret overwhelming him as he gets pushed into the railway on the tracks of a close upcoming train in what looks like the start of a typical Isekai. But it's not an Isekai and he didn't die and get reincarnated in a fantasy world, but instead wakes up 12 years in the past, a time where he was still a delinquent in highschool and still dating Hina. After seeing her again, he gets overwhelmed with emotions once more and decides to save her at all costs. The step he took in doing this was by informing her little brother Naoto whom he just saved from a gang of thugs the date they die in the future and to protect Hina and himself at all costs. Upon shaking Naoto's hand, he wakes up in the present and the first person he sees is still Naoto but as an adult this time. His tip in the past did change the future but only saved Naoto and Hina still remained dead. In light of this, the two work together as they utilize Takemichi's time traveling powers in stopping all events that lead to Hina's tragic fate. It's a time traveling adventure as the loser of a main character finally has a purpose and this plot makes it a lot similar to Erased.
(Drama, Slice of Life, Romance)
Long anime titles that practically describe the premise of an anime are pretty saturated nowadays in the anime world. 'That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime', 'ive been killing slimes for 300 years and maxed out my level' "Romcom where the childhood friend won't lose', these kinds of titles give the potential viewers of the anime a certain idea of what they feel anime would look like and most times it's pretty accurate.
From the title, it's already clear that it's about a man who well got rejected and then took a highschool girl into his home and this is bound to spur some controversial ideas about this anime. It's already causing a negative effect on the real world as there has been 2 cases of kidnapped highschool girls since it's release. This is because people fail to understand the message and core themes being represented in this anime.
It's a tale of redemption, acceptance and emotional growth and it honestly surprised me how much I ended up loving this show.
Sayu Ogiwara, the beautiful teenage highschooler ran away from her home in Hokkaido due to some family issues and after sleeping with a lot of guys to put a roof over her head, Yoshida, an office worker who just got rejected by his boss and longstanding crush Airi Gotou, finds her by the side of the road and takes her in. Being someone already accustomed to exchanging her body for a place to stay, she tries to seduce Yoshida but gets rejected. Yoshida, our firm and matured male protagonist decides to help her instead of using her and the wholesome story of Sayu's salvation and growth begins as she gets exposed to a world of kindness for the first time in her life. It's an anime which seems shallow but will definitely surprise you with how deep it actually is.
(Action, Military, Drama)
Speaking of deep new shows that unexpectedly blew me away, the new Sci-fi-Action anime from A1 Pictures has been nothing but amazing.
The year is 2148, The Republic of San Magnolia, a country populated by white haired race of people referred to as 'Alba' , currently in a heated war with the Gladian Empire, a nation which sends a swarm of unmanned drones known as the 'legion' to invade and destroy the country. The 85 districts of San Magnolia are well protected as the nation also created it's own unmanned drones after years of research, prompting a war with no casualties in the imperial army of the nation. This is what the Government claims to the general populace whereas there's no such thing as a bloodless war, an 86th district does exist and it's filled with people discarded and seen as 'inhuman' for not possessing the common Alba trait of having white hair. These soldiers of this district 86 are the ones the nation sees as disposable and they're the ones who bear the loss and pain of the war, being the ones who pilot the drones claimed to be unmanned by the Government. Vladlena Milize, the young idealistic main character who lost her father on the front lines in 86 was tasked to be the 'handler' of this unit and commands their detachment from the remote rear in the event of a legion attack. In the course of carrying out her duty she develops a strong emotional connection to these soldiers and deeply sympathizes with their conditions and hopes to make a change in their sad situation.
It's an impactful action packed tragic story that everyone needs to be following right now.
(Supernatural, Adventure, Drama)
When this season approached, everyone who's read the source material of To Your Eternity wouldn't shutup about how it was going be a contender for Anime of the Season and possibly of the Year. After watching all the episodes that's dropped so far I can honestly say I strongly agree with those preconceived notions. It wouldn't be a stretch to call this the most anticipated new anime this season and with the source material itself being beautiful, the performance of this anime all relied on the adaptation of it. The anime adaptation of To Your Eternity is a truly spectacular one with beautiful visuals and music that just creates the atmosphere it aims at emanating. The smooth pacing and detail put into every scene makes it feel like a Shinkai or Ghibli film and with the story itself being amazing, there's nothing to take away from this new gem.
This is the story of a sentient orb which is immortal and has the ability to take the form of things that impacted on it, cast to Earth to experience life in all its light and darkness. The orb first takes the shape of a rock, then a white wolf that died close to it and soon after a human form. It wanders around, facing different experiences as it learns more about the world from the people who impact on it.
With the main character being an immortal being, what we are presented with here is a tragic but beautiful tale of a being that knew nothing of the world, but learns and grows with the more experiences and people he meets in his endless life, like the coming of age story of an infant growing along side it's parents with the eventuality of having to face their deaths. The themes of this show are purely shown in every key moment and this anime is one which should be on everyone's list of best new animes this year.
(Sci-fi, Music, Action)
With everything I've said about To Your Eternity, I honestly know it's surprising to see another anime topping it as my Anime of the Season and trust me it's a huge surprise to me too. With the greatness of the source material and the production specs from the trailer, To Your Eternity was highly anticipated and already guaranteed to be among the best of the season on everyone's radar. But once in a while, there comes that great new Surprise hit anime show that completely blows you away and steals your heart on the deepest level. For me, the biggest surprise this season was the way I was greatly captivated by the first few episodes of Vivy Fluorite Eyes Song.
The visual aspect of this Anime Original is simply top quality as WIT Studio, the original studio behind the first 3 seasons of Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga and Great Pretender proves their proficience once again in giving us something beautiful. Looking at the sound, from the opening to the ending to the sound effects to the OSTs to the songs performed in the anime, the sound is simply spectacular making this great as a music anime.
As for the story, we got another interesting, captivating and well written story from Tappei Nagatsuki, the author of the famous Rezero.
In a futuristic world where A.I.s in form of androids exist to serve humans, each having their core directive and purpose, the first autonomous A.I. known as 'Diva' was programmed basically with the task of singing to make people happy. And she does that with dedication every day, until she gets surprised when she met another autonomous A.I. named Matsumoto taking the form of a teddy bear. Matsumoto apparently was from 100 years into the future, a time where a devastating war between A.I.s and humans left the world in ruins and he was sent to the past to prevent that impending doom with her help. Although she was skeptical at first, Diva takes on the name 'Vivy' and agrees to work with Matsumoto on a mission to save the world and prevent the upcoming war by impacting on the vital events which caused the war over the course of the century known as Singularity points.
The fact that it involves time travel and changing the past to prevent a terrible fate makes it a lot like Tokyo Revengers in setting, but thematically it's a lot more like To your Eternity. Both shows have to do with seemingly immortal beings which gets their world opened up as they get impacted on by the people they meet through the course of their endless lifespan. The thing that makes me put Vivy above To Your Eternity as my Anime of the season is simply that while the later is steady in progression, Vivy feels more directed and has done a whole lot more in its starter episodes. Vivy has a bit of everything; Music, Action, Romance, Comedy, Drama, as each Singularity point Diva makes an impact, makes an even bigger impact on her as a character. Vivy meeting other autonomous A.I.s on the course of her mission which she sees as her kin and experiencing their story and passion makes this one hell of thematic show and with the astoundingly creative sci-fi world and concepts of this anime, it's honestly one that's going to end up being unforgettable.
And that's the list of my top 20 favourite new anime this season. Though, a quick reminder that the anime listed here are those I see as the best this season and others also exist which are worth mention.
The World Ends With You and The Way of The Househusband which were both highly anticipated adaptations failed woefully at being even satisfying especially in the visual aspect, Slime Diaries which is a lighter themed version of the popular That Time I got Reincarnated As A Slime anime, Jouran: The Princess of Snow and Blood and Mars Red both being Historical-Supernatural-Action shows which honestly feel generic and uninteresting compared to the rest this season and finally Edens Zero which is Fairy Tail creator Hiro Mashima's new sci-fi anime which seems so unsettlingly similar to his previous works and really unnecessarily immature.
In reading this, I'll advise not to take the positions of the shows to heart and discard the ones on the bottom part of this list because as I've said before, these 20 shows are all good and worth trying and this list could've honestly taken any form or order based on how entertaining every single show on this list is, it all balls down to personal appeal at the end of the day. So I'd advise everyone reading this to try out a good number of these shows because you won't want to miss out on the craziness this season.
As for the question of whether the Spring season lived up to Winter, Hell Yes it did. It lived up to it and straight up surpassed it, because in my opinion, what makes a season truly remarkable aren't the expected hits and highly anticipated sequels that dominate the season, but the new shows which surprise you and show you a world of entertainment you've never seen before, and this season we got a storm of those. Spring 2021 is going to be one memorable season because at the end of this season, we're gonna have a great number of shows to anticipate follow-up sequels of in the coming years.
Its been an extremely long discussion, but we've come to the end of another Seasonal Rundown and with the next season looking pretty amazing already with many upcoming hits, looks like we'll certainly have fun discussing about that too.
If you've read up to this point, you're highly appreciated and loved.
